More About First Lieutenant Schreiner

During his time at the university, First Lieutenant Schreiner was known as "Big Dave," after being named to the All-Big 10 college football team in 1941 and All-American team in 1942. He was also co-captain of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's team in 1942. Upon graduation Dave wanted to join the US Army Air Corps but was rejected due to being color blind.

He joined the U.S. Marines in 1943 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He fought on Guam in 1944 where on July 27, 1944 he received a minor head wound with his helmet taking the force of the blow. One April 1, 1945, he landed on Okinawa where his unit moved to the front lines in the region of Shuri Castle and Sugar Loaf Hill.

1st Lt. Schreiner died from the wounds he received while leading his unit in capturing the final Japanese bastion of defense. While leading Company A 1/4 6th Marine Division to the ridge line on June 20, he was fatally wounded.
