More About Lieutenant Howie

Lieutenant Lloyd George Howie of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, died while serving in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. A naval aviator assigned to Fighter Squadron 53 with the U.S. 7th Fleet's Task Force 77, he died in the line of duty on May 15, 1970, at the age of 26. During combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, he was flying an F-8J Crusader when he attempted to land aboard his aircraft carrier. Challenging weather and rough seas complicated carrier operations, causing multiple pilots to abort their initial landing attempts. While maneuvering for another approach, his aircraft crashed into the sea off the coast of North Vietnam. He was declared killed in the accident.
