More About First Lieutenant Dettmann

Harold Dettmann enlisted into the Army before September 1941 and was commissioned as an officer, attaining the rank of 1st lieutenant. He was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers in January 1942.

1st Lieutenant Dettmann served overseas in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the 722nd Engineer Depot Company.

The 722nd was stationed at Dulag, Leyte following the US invasion of the island. On October 25, 1944, the depot where the 722nd was stationed was hit directly by a bomb from a Japanese aircraft, detonating munitions and setting everything in the area on fire. A large number of the 722nd were killed in this attack, it seems Dettmann was one of them.

1st Lieutenant Harold Dettmann is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
